What's This Course About

Generative AI for Instructional Design shows you how to design better learning experiences faster using generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. AI can help you analyse learning needs, write learning outcomes, outline courses, draft content and activities, create assessments and produce supporting materials, while you apply your expertise to ensure quality and learner impact. The course is designed for instructional designers, trainers, learning and development professionals, educators and subject matter experts who create training.

You will start by getting started with generative AI for instructional design, understanding what AI can and cannot do, how to write effective prompts and how AI fits into models such as ADDIE and backward design. You will use AI to analyse audiences and learning needs, write measurable learning outcomes and outline course structures, lesson plans and storyboards. Next you will create learning content and assessments with AI, drafting explanations, examples, case studies, scenarios and activities, and generating quiz questions, rubrics and feedback aligned to your outcomes.

Throughout the course you will learn how to review AI-generated material for accuracy, clarity, inclusiveness and instructional quality, adapt it for different delivery modes such as classroom, virtual and e-learning, and manage copyright and data privacy. Every activity is hands-on, building materials for a course of your choice. By the end, you will be able to use generative AI confidently to design engaging, effective learning experiences in a fraction of the usual time.

Dr. Muhammed Siraj is a cybersecurity specialist and academic with 15 years of experience, serving as Senior Lecturer in the Department of Informatics and Director of Graduate and Continuous Education at Academic City University in Accra. He holds a PhD in Security in Computing from Universiti Putra Malaysia, where his research focused on blockchain security, an MSc in Information and Communication Technology from Aalborg University in Denmark, and a degree from the University of Ghana. He is a licensed independent assessor with Ghana's Cyber Security Authority, holds leadership roles in national cybersecurity and privacy professional bodies, and is certified as a Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH), Computer Hacking Forensic Investigator (CHFI) and Certified Data Protection Supervisor (CDPS). Before joining Academic City, he served as Acting Director of ICT and Data Protection Supervisor at Wisconsin International University College. His expertise spans penetration testing, digital forensics, incident response, malware analysis, cryptography, cloud and IoT security, zero trust architecture, cyber threat intelligence, data protection, and governance, risk and compliance.

Dr. Siraj's research interests cover blockchain, cybersecurity, distributed computing, consensus protocols and machine learning, with published work on blockchain consensus security, smart-contract privacy preservation for sensitive records in the cloud, and new consensus mechanisms. This background gives him a distinctive perspective on artificial intelligence: as organisations adopt AI tools, agents and data-driven automation, he helps learners understand how to protect the data these systems depend on, recognise new attack surfaces, and put sound governance, privacy and access controls in place so that AI can be used safely and responsibly. In the classroom he connects technical practice with regulation, privacy and human factors, drawing on real-world security and data-protection cases to show how concepts apply in professional settings, and his experiential, hands-on teaching style has made him a trusted trainer for students and working professionals alike.

Few trainers build the learning platforms they teach on, but Dr. Alfred Ang does exactly that. As CTO of Tertiary Infotech Academy Pte Ltd, the Singapore organisation behind Tertiary Courses, Dr. Ang works as a full-stack AI developer, Agentic AI solution architect and corporate trainer, building EdTech and business solutions end-to-end across front end, back end, databases, cloud and native mobile apps. More than 300 public repositories on GitHub document that work, and many of them are about learning design. Dr. Ang built a self-hosted, AI-powered learning and training management system with AI agent automation, together with companion iOS and Android apps for learners and trainers. Dr. Ang also created a Claude-powered courseware generator on Streamlit and a set of Claude Code skills that produce slide decks, learner guides and lesson plans in one consistent house style. Other projects include ai-exams, a certification practice-exam platform with AI-assisted question generation, a self-contained SCORM e-learning module with narrated video, interactive topics and knowledge checks, and a gamified AI learning portal for children covering storytelling, coding and phonics. Each one tackles a familiar instructional design problem, from writing outcomes to producing assessments, with generative AI doing the heavy lifting under human review. Building these tools has also taught Dr. Ang where generative AI falls short, such as drifting off the intended learning level, inventing references or producing questions that test recall instead of application, and those lessons inform the quality checks taught in this course.

In Generative AI for Instructional Design, Dr. Ang brings that experience into the room so that instructional designers, trainers and learning and development professionals can work faster without lowering their standards. The first part of the course gets participants started with tools such as ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, and shows how to use them to analyse learning needs, draft measurable learning outcomes and outline a course structure that flows logically. The second part focuses on creating learning content and assessments with AI: writing lesson content and activities, generating scenario-based questions and answer guides, and producing supporting materials such as job aids and facilitator notes. Because Dr. Ang has automated courseware and question generation at production scale, the class spends real time on the parts that matter most, including prompt patterns that keep tone and level consistent, checking AI output for accuracy and alignment, and deciding where the designer's professional judgement must override the machine. Participants work on their own topics during the session, so they leave with draft outcomes, a course outline and sample assessments they can refine and use. Dr. Ang's teaching style is practical and conversational, with live demonstrations followed by guided practice and feedback. Attention is also given to responsible use, including protecting learner and organisational data, acknowledging AI assistance where appropriate and keeping content accessible and inclusive, so that faster development never comes at the expense of learning quality, fairness or the trust of the learners who will ultimately use the materials.
