Robot Operating System (ROS) Fundamentals teaches you how to build and program robots using ROS, the industry-standard open-source framework for robot software. ROS provides the tools, libraries and conventions that let robotics developers connect sensors, motors, perception and planning into working robotic systems, and is used in research, manufacturing, logistics and autonomous vehicles. The course is designed for engineers, developers, students and technical professionals with basic programming knowledge who want a practical introduction to robotics software.

You will start by getting started with ROS, understanding its architecture, installing and setting up a workspace, and using command-line tools to explore a running robot system. Next you will learn ROS nodes, topics and messages, writing publisher and subscriber nodes in Python, and using services, actions and parameters so different parts of a robot can communicate. You will then cover robot modelling, sensors and simulation, describing a robot with URDF, visualising it in RViz and simulating sensors such as cameras and lidar in Gazebo.

The final topic covers navigation, motion and robot applications, including transforms, mapping, localisation, path planning and autonomous navigation, and how to bring these together into a practical robot application. Every topic is hands-on in simulation, so you can experiment safely without expensive hardware. By the end, you will understand how ROS-based robots work and be able to develop, simulate and test your own robot software with confidence.

Prerequisite

Basic computer and file-management skills are expected. Familiarity with basic programming, electronics and computer use will help you follow the exercises.

Software Requirement

Install and test the listed software before class. Confirm the required version and account or licence access in your joining instructions. Cloud and AI services may charge subscription or usage fees.

Also prepare the tools needed for the practical exercises:

Hardware Requirement

Bring your own laptop and power adaptor with reliable internet access. A webcam, microphone and headset are needed for live online sessions. Ensure your device can run the course software and that you have permission to install it. Use an Ubuntu-compatible laptop or a trainer-approved virtual machine; confirm the ROS version and architecture before class. Confirm whether physical robot hardware is needed or simulation is used.
